When visiting Dar es salaam as it´s known by Arabic “ haven of piece “ is one of the commercial and multi-cultural place long inspired by spices from Zanzibar and Indian imigrants, provides a vivid snapshot of Tanzania society.
Most travelers tend to pass through the city on their way either to Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro or safari trips, but they´re missing out on to see colonial mansions to modern Africa buildings.
Dar es salaam have so much to experience from authentic cousin. Some highlights are like:
Uban Jiko – The place to experience very spicy meals from Indian kitchen, oriental to international. Nyama choma as known in Swahili meaning of barbeque from fish steak, chicken, meat to king prawns. Different curries but also bugger and pizza.
Samaki Samaki – mean fish in suahili, for the best sea food in town including fried calamari, tuna steak, octopus, prawn along with other many favorites.
Sawasdee – Located in new Africa hotel a Thai kitchen in the mid of Dar es salaam is easly the finest in town. Delicately spiced lamb and nutty Malaysian curries one needs to try. Apart of delicious meal, the main attraction is the surroundings, there´s no better vintage point from which to gaze across the harbor and into the city.
Addis in Dar – a restaurant reputed to save most Ethiopian food out of Addis Ababa. The hand washing is part of tradition, gather around a small table and choose you favorite dishes. Here you´ll get a huge sourdough pancake – injera, saved with aromatic spiced sauces. Meat, prawn, chicken to veggie spiced side main meal. The atmosphere is very good.
Karambezi café – Sitting on the edge of the cliff of five star hotel sea cliff, situated at the northern most point of the Msasani peninsula. Visitors enjoyed elegant international cuisine. It offers incredible view of Indian ocean, sea food platter, meat to veggies and other delights. On Saturday evening they do offer live music while dine.
National museum and house of culture
The national museum Is located opposite to iFM college. Exhibits many primitive ancient fossils, including those excavated from the Olduvai Gorge as well as some British and Germany colonial artifacts plus other archaeological finds, many collection for insights into Tanzania´s past and its mosaic of culture, including the Shirazi civilization of Kilwa and Zanzibar slave trade.
There´s a small part of vehicle collection, including Rolls-Royce used first by the British colonial government and later by Julius Nyerere.
